Navratri is a festival to dedicate to the worship of Goddess mother durga and her nine different forms.Nine forms of goddess durga is also called as Navadurga.This festival is celebrated nine days continuously tenth day is Dasara or (Vijaya Dashami,Dussehra,Dashain,Dashahara,Durgotsav) is the final day of Navratri Durga Puja.It is also called as Vijaya Dashami.

Mother Durga is form of Shakti and expressed her self into 3 main forms i.e Mother Mahasaraswati,Mother Mahalakshmi and Mother  Mahakali who are the active energies (Shakti) of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh(Shiva) respectively.Further these 3 forms of Shakti gave rise to three more forms each i.e (3 x 3 = 9 Different Forms).Hence in all, these 9 forms together are known as Nav-Durga.

Dates of Navratri Festival in 2012


"Navratri" meaning "nine nights" is a significant Hindu festival, which is celebrated twice in a year - "Chaitra" or "Vasant Navratri" (Between  March - April), and "Sharad Navratri" (Between October - November).

Chaitra Navratri Festival in 2012 will starts on 23rd of March 2012 and will continue for 9 days, i.e. till 1st of April 2012.

Sharad Navratri Festival in 2012 will starts on Tuesday 16th of October 2012 and will continue for 9 days, i.e. till Wednesday 24th of October 2012.

If you see we have Nava-ratri (9 nights), Nava-patrika (9 leaves / herbs / plants), Nava-graha (9 planets), and Nava-Durga (9 forms of Maa Shakti).

It is believed that if we worship goddess durga with full of fervor during Navaratri, it will lift our divine spirit in us and fill our life with happiness and prosperity.


Nine Forms of Maa Durga to worship in these Nine Days of (Sharad Navratri) :


1. Maa Shailputri :
Maa Shailputri a Daughter of Mountain also known as Sati Bhavani, Parvati or Hemavati, the daughter of Hemavana - the king of the himalayas.She is among Navdurga her worship takes place on first day of Navratri festival.she rides a bull and carries a trident and a lotus in her two hands.

2. Maa Bhramcharni
Maa Bhramcharni or Tapasyacharini is among Navdurga her worship takes place on second day of Navratri festival.On her left hand side she holds water utensil (Kumbha) and on right hand side she holds rosary.Maa Bhramcharni is in a highly pious and peaceful form or is in meditation.She is full with merriment.This form of Durga is related to the severe penance undertaken by Sati and Parvati in their respective births to attain Lord Shiva as husband.
who ever is worshipped Maa Bhramcharni their lives is filled with bliss,happiness, peace and prosperity .

3. Maa Chandraghanta
Maa Chandraghanta is among Navdurga her worship takes place on third day of Navratri festival.She called as Chandraghanta because She has a 'chandra' or half moon in her forehead in the shape of a 'ghanta' or bell.  Maa Chandraghanta is Golden in color, possesses ten hands,rides on Tiger with 3 eyes.In that ten hands she carries pot, bow, arrow, lotus, discus, rosary, trident, mace and sword.The fearsome sound of her bell terrifies all the villains, demons and danavas.

4. Maa Kushmanda
Maa Kushmanda is among Navdurga her worship takes place on Fourth day of Navratri festival.The meaning of the name "Kushmanda" is as follows: "Ku" = a little, "ushma" = warmth, "anda" = the cosmic egg. So Maa Kushmanda is also considered as creator of the universe.Maa Kushmanda possesses eight hands and rides on Tiger.In that eight hands she carries bow, pot, arrow, lotus, disc, kamandalu, rosary and a club.The universe was no more than a full of darkness, until her light spreads in all directions like rays from the sun.

5. Maa Skandmata
Maa Skandmata is among Navdurga her worship takes place on Fifth day of Navratri festival.She also holds Her son named "Skanda" on her lap.Maa Skandmata possesses four hands,three eyes and rides on lion.In that four hands she carries lotus, kamandalu (pot) and bell and her one hand is in blessing posture.

6. Maa Kaatyayani
Maa Kaatyayani is among Navdurga her worship takes place on Sixth day of Navratri festival.
Maa Kaatyayani possesses four hands and rides on lion.In that four hands she carries sword, shield and lotus and her one hand is in blessing posture.There was a story of Katyayan who born in this "Katya" lineage Katyayan had observed penance with a desire to get ma durga as his daughter. As a result ma durga took birth as a daughter of Katyayan. Therefore her name is "Katyayani".

7. Maa Kaalratri
Maa Kaalratri is among Navdurga her worship takes place on Seventh day of Navratri festival.Maa Kaatyayani possesses four hands and rides on donkey.In that four hands she carries sword, trident and noose and her one hand is in blessing posture.Maa Kaalratri is black like night. Durga hairs are unlocked.This is the violent and dark side of Durga.
Her gesture of protection assures us of freedom from fear and troubles. So she is also called as "Shubhamkari" (one who does good).

8. Maa Mahagauri
Maa Mahagauri is among Navdurga her worship takes place on Eight day of Navratri festival.Maa Mahagauri  looks as white as moon and jasmine.Maa Mahagauri possesses four hands and rides on Bull.She is calm and peaceful and exists in peaceful style.The above left hand of Maa Mahagauri is in "Fearless - Mudra" and lower left hand holds "Trishul" The above right hand has tambourine and lower right hand is in blessing posture.

9. Maa Siddhiratri
Maa Siddhiratri is among Navdurga her worship takes place on Ninth day of Navratri festival.Maa Siddhiratri is seated on a lotus and possesses four hands.In that four hands she carries a lotus, mace, discus and book.she is surrounded by Siddhas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Demons and Gods who are worshipping her.There are eight Siddhis i.e. Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Iishitva and Vashitva. Maha Shakti Siddhiratri gives all these Siddhies.It is said in "Devi puran" that even Lord Shiva got all these Siddhies by worshipping Maha Shakti.With her grace the half body of Shiv has became of  "Ardhanarishvar" thatswhy Lord Shiva also called as Ardhanarishvar.

Pratipada - First Day - October 16, 2011 (Tuesday) - Red Color
Dvitiya - Second Day - October 17, 2012 (Wednesday) - Sky Blue Color
Tritiya / Chaturthi - Third Day - October 18, 2012 (Thursday) -Yellow Color
Panchami - Fourth Day - October 19 (Friday) - Green Color
Sashti - Fifth Day - October 20 (Saturday)  - Grey Color
Saptami - Sixth Day - October 21 (Sunday) - Orange Color
Ashtami - Seventh Day - October 22 (Monday) - White Color
Navami - Eighth Day - October 23 (Tuesday) - Pink Color
Vijayadasami - Ninth Day - October 24 (Wednesday) - Blue Color


The nine days have great religious significance as Goddess Durga, the divine mother, had destroyed the evil force (in the form of the demon Mahishasura) during this period.
